We started the morning early with a Turkey Trot. Unfortunately we didn't start it early enough and by the time we got through downtown Detroit traffic (there's not usually traffic in Detroit but with 18,500 runners gathering for the turkey trot in addition to parade traffic it's one of the busier days of the year) and got parked we had 5 minutes before the start of the 1-mile run. In an attempt to get Carter and Gage to the starting line on time Jared and I hurled the kids into the jogging strollers (yes I said strollers) and started running. We didn't realize we had parked a mile away and didn't quite make it before the start of the race but we joined the back of the pack and started running. I had anticipated letting Carter run the mile by himself while Jared chaperoned Gage but they changed up the course of the race this year and instead of doing an easy out and back along the river front they had the mile runners trotting down Jefferson Ave weaving in and out of the 18,000 people trying to get to the start of the 5K/10K runs. I shed my parka and starting weaving through people with Carter. He did awesome! (too good, I think we need to challenge him with a 5K next year.) Feeling like I had already gotten a decent workout for the morning we waited for Gage. Just as Gage and Jared came across the finish line they announced that the 10K and 5K races had started and the first 5K finisher should be done in a few minutes. Fantastic! We booked it to the start of the 10K race and got there right behind all of the walkers. We finally got ahead of them and had an enjoyable, non-competitive run to start our day. After the race we stuck around for the parade which is lots of fun with big balloons, extravagant floats and marching bands from all around the region. It was a great way to spend our Thanksgiving morning followed by good eats with friends! We missed being with family and were reminded of how grateful we are for them but all in all it was a perfect day.
Seriously? I could eat this munchkin up!!
Ready, ready, ready, ready to run!
Carter's finish
Gage digging deep to find what it takes to finish... a mile is a long way for those little legs!
A little bit ridiculous! I should have made him run like that the whole way!! I think Carter is officially too big for the jogging stroller.
Watching the Detroit Thanksgiving Day parade... yes it was cold outside! :)
Have you ever seen a cow jump over the moon? We have!
Goob in a nutshell.
Happy Thanksgiving! I have MUCH to be thankful for!!
