I don't really know how to post our pictures as there are sooo many (literally over 1000). Most of the pictures don't really do justice to the beauty we saw around us. A camera just can't quite capture what the eye can see, at least not when I'm the one behind the camera!
We flew into Frankfurt and had hoped to get some much needed rest on the plane since it was a red-eye. We did get some sleep but a few hours before we were to land I was awoken by someone asking from a few rows back if there was a doctor on board. I woke Jared up and he went to assess the situation. There was a gentleman who was having a hard time remaining conscious. He couldn't answer any questions as he was coming in and out of consciousness. After retrieving the "doctor's bag" from the back of the plane Jared was able to do an assessment. His blood pressure was extremely low and so was his blood sugar. Apparently the same thing had happened on the way over to the US. They administered an IV (thank goodness there was a paramedic close by because I feel sorry for anyone that has to have an IV administered by a doctor) and gave him a couple glasses of juice and were able to stabilize him. It was pretty crazy that Jared was the only doc on board.
Frankfurt wasn't my favorite city, it was big and modern and seemed a lot like anything you'd see in the US. We caught up on some much needed sleep, did a little sight seeing and some shopping.
There were some things there that you don't find in the US:
I really wanted to ride one of these bier bikes but unfortunately you can't just buy a seat on it, you have to rent the whole thing. I don't think Jared and I would have gotten very far just the two of us. That night Jared drug me out to downtown Frankfurt to watch the US play England on the jumbo-tron, I was very, very sleepy. It didn't take long to realize that soccer is super crazy in Germany.
We met up with Travis and Jenny the next day and headed up to Koblenz. On the way there we stopped off in a small town, Bad Camberg, just to take a look around. It was a really cute little place and we went into this church that had a great museum in the upstairs portion of the church.
There was a cute little old couple there playing their cellos.
There were a lot of fantastic historical items from the town in this little museum.
And some very creepy mannequins and dolls!
Next stop Koblenz. The highlights of Koblenz were our morning run along the Rhine River, exploring the festung up on the hill, trying to find the cute little yellow castle with green ivy growing all over it (which we never did find. We could see it from the river but it was an adventure trying to get there), trying my first döner kebab, the river boat ride down the Rhine and our near death experience in the tunnel on the way up to the festung. With Travis behind the wheel in a country with no speed limits it wasn't the only time I feared for my life.
On our way to Rothenburg ob der Tauber we stopped in Würzburg for a few hours, the start of the romantic road. We stopped a guy on the street to find the best German food in the area. He told us to go to Weinstube Maulaffenbäck. He did not disappoint. It was a charming little restaurant full of locals. Everyone looked at us as if they were wondering how the tourists found their little hot spot.
The white weiners were not my fave, but I don't really like sausages, however, the mustard was to die for so it made the meal doable. The bratkartoffel was de-licious! (Basically potato slices fried in lots of butter sprinkled with green onions and bacon, what's not to love?)
We stopped by one of the castles there and strolled through the gardens, it was beautiful.
The details on the building are impeccable.
Do we look like tourists??
